Cleaning Questions

Is this oven dishwasher safe?

The pellet scoop, Accessory Frame, and Roast Rack are dishwasher safe. The unit base, Pro Heat Pan, Pizza Stone, and Smoke Box are NOT dishwasher safe. Be sure to clean all accessories and the main unit after each use. PIZZA STONE CAN NOT GET WET

How should I clean the unit and accessories?

The oven should be cleaned thoroughly after each use. ALWAYS let the appliance and accessories cool before cleaning.

  • Unplug the oven from the power source before cleaning. Keep the door open after removing your food to allow the unit to cool quicker.
  • Remove the smoke box and safely discard all contents after every use.
  • The pellet scoop, Accessory Frame and Roast Rack are dishwasher safe. The unit base, Pro Heat Pan, Pizza Stone and smoke box are not dishwasher safe. Be sure to clean all accessories and the main unit after each use. PIZZA STONE CAN NOT GET WET
  • Cleaning of the smoke box is not required. However, if desired, a wire brush can be used to remove extra creosote.

NOTE: DO NOT use a liquid cleaning solution on the smoke box.

  • After each use, the inner cavity should be cleaned with soapy water and a nylon brush to deodorize the unit and remove any grease.
  • After many uses of smoker/woodfire flavor technology, the inside of the oven will become dirty. This acts as a "seasoning" and isn't necessary to be cleaned. Same with the pizza stone.

NOTE: NEVER use abrasive tools or cleaners. NEVER immerse the main unit in water or any other liquid. DO NOT place non-dishwasher safe items in the dishwasher.

  • When stacking the coated accessories to store, place a cloth or paper towel between
How do I clean the creosote build-up in the smoke box?

We recommend using a wire brush to remove creosote build-up if desired.

How do I clean the smoke box?

It is not required to clean the smoke box after every use. We recommend using a wire brush to remove extra creosote after every 10 uses. Note: DO NOT use liquid cleaning solutions on the smoke box.

How do I clean the pizza stone?

DO NOT wash the pizza stone. It can crack or break if it comes in contact with cold water when it is hot. Water can stay on the stone for a long time; if it gets wet, allow it to dry completely before using again. Soap will damage the natural coating and remain inside the stone after it dries. Black spots and stains are normal on pizza stones.

Expect your pizza stone to become discolored over time - a seasoned stone is a good thing (like a cast iron pan). But if you do wish to clean it:

  •   Allow it to cool completely, lightly scrape it with a non-metal utensil to remove any stuck debris, then wipe any remaining debris off with a soft cloth.

Cooking Questions

When do I press the Woodfire Flavor Technology Button?

Press the Woodfire Flavor Technology button before pressing "Start" in order to add smoke when using the Specialty Roast, Max Roast, Pizza, Bake, or Dehydrate functions. You do not need to press the Woodfire Flavor Technology button when using the Smoker function.

Why is preheating taking so long/When do I know that preheating is complete?

Preheat times vary by function and unit temperature.

  • BAKE, SPECIALTY ROAST, MAX ROAST, PIZZA: 5-25 minutes.
  • WARM, SMOKER, DEHYDRATE, BROIL: No preheat.

If you are not using Woodfire Flavor Technology, preheat times will be 5–7 minutes faster.

Using the unit in inclement weather with heavy rain could cause longer preheat times.

We recommend using only extension cords marked with the letters "SJOW" and stating, "suitable for use with outdoor appliances." Longer cord length may also cause longer preheat times; we recommend using the shortest outdoor-rated extension cord that fits your outdoor oven setup.

While preheating is strongly recommended for best results, you can skip it by pressing and holding the START/STOP button for 4 seconds. "ADD FOOD" will flash across the screen when preheating is complete. Once food is added to the unit, press the start/stop button to begin the cooking timer.

"Why does the preheat progress bar not start from the beginning?"

When the unit is warm from previously being used, it will not require the full preheating time.

Can I cancel or override preheating?

Preheating is highly recommended for best results, but you can skip it by pressing and holding the START/STOP button for 4 seconds.

If using SPECIALTY ROAST, you can skip the stage 1 cook by pressing and holding the righthand dial for 3 seconds.

Should I add my ingredients before or after preheating?

For best results, let the unit preheat before adding ingredients if using Pizza, Max Roast, Specialty Roast or Bake.

My food is burned.

Do not add food until recommended preheating time is complete. For best results, check progress throughout cooking, and remove food when the desired level of brownness has been achieved. Remove food immediately after the cooking time is complete to avoid overcooking.

For pizza, here are some recommendations to avoid burning:

  • Reduce the temperature if the dough is thicker than the recommended charts above per Pizza type
  • Thin out your dough for the next cook
  • Use fewer toppings
  • Avoid using toppings with too much moisture
  • Reduce sugar/oil or other additives to your dough
  • Use the Ninja Pizza Peel to allow excess flour to fall away
  • Clean your baking stone
Can I batch cook with this unit?

If batch cooking meats, for best results, we recommend washing the pan thoroughly in between batches. Especially when cooking with high heat, high-fat content foods, and access oils.

If cooking Pizza, for best results, wait until ADD FOOD reappears and the "Ready" light appears on the display to indicate your stone is at temp. For best output, we recommend re-charging your stone after 3 pizzas.

If you use Woodfire Flavor Technology and want to run back-to-back smoking sessions, we recommend re-filling the smoke box using the pellet scoop when half the pellets have burned. DO NOT re-fill more than 1 or 2 times. DO NOT re-ignite pellets.

Can I use the unit when it is raining or snowing?

Yes, ensure you read through all safety instructions in the instruction booklet before use. Preheat times could be impacted depending on the severity of the weather.

What are the temperature ranges for each setting?
  • Pizza: 350-700 F
  • Max Roast: 450-700 F
  • Specialty Roast: 200-700 F
  • Broil: 500-700 F
  • Bake: 300-700 F
  • Smoker: 145-375 F
  • Warm: None
  • Dehydrate: 105-195F
What surfaces can I place the unit on while in use?

Place the oven on a stable and level surface. It is important that the surface can support the weight and size of the unit. The underside stays cool, so you can place the unit on any surface. Position the unit at least 3 feet from walls or anything overhead due to heat and smoke output.

Smoking and Pellets Questions

Do I need to completely fill the smoke box with pellets?

Yes, always fill the smoke box to the top. We've perfected the amount of pellets needed for each smoke session. Regardless of the function or food load, the unit will burn through them appropriately.

How do I dispose of burnt pellets after a cook cycle?

Pellets may continue to burn after the cook time is complete. Do not touch or remove the smoke box until the oven has stopped smoking, the pellets have completely burnt out, and the smoke box has cooled. At that point, remove the smoke box and safely discard cooled ash contents.

Wood ash is an excellent source of nutrients for plants. To use in your garden, lightly scatter on the soil, or add it to your existing compost.

When should I add pellets to the smoke box?

Use the Ninja pellet scoop to fill the smoke box with Ninja woodfire pellets. Pellets need to be added before starting a cooking function that is compatible with Woodfire Flavor Technology (Smoker, Pizza, Bake, Specialty/Max Roast, Dehydrate).

When using the SMOKER function,  you can add more pellets once the first batch has fully burned. Press and hold the Woodfire Flavor Technology button for 3 seconds to ignite new full box of pellets.

We recommend re-filling the smoke box using the pellet scoop when half the pellets have burned to run back-to-back smoking sessions. DO NOT re-fill more than 1 or 2 times. DO NOT re-ignite pellets.

Where should I keep my pellets stored?

Always store pellets in a dry area. Any moisture in the pellets can compromise ignition and quality of smoke flavor.

Should I use any oils or nonstick sprays when smoking?

No, we do not recommend using any oils or nonstick sprays when smoking because smoke will not adhere to the food as well.

When should I empty the smoke box?

Always let the unit and accessories cool before cleaning. Once cooled, remove the smoke box and safely discard all contents after every use.

Can I add pellets during a cook cycle?

When using the SMOKER function, you can add more pellets once the first batch has fully burned. Press and hold the Woodfire Flavor Technology  button for 3 seconds to ignite the new full box of pellets.

To run back to back smoking sessions, we recommend re-filling the smoke box using the pellet scoop when half the pellets have burned. DO NOT re-fill more than 1 or 2 times. DO NOT re-ignite pellets.

Can I use wood chips instead of pellets?

No, this unit is only compatible with Ninja Woodfire Pellets.

Do my smoking pellets have to be Ninja Woodfire Pellets?

Yes, for best results, performance, and flavor, use Ninja Woodfire Pellets when adding smoke. We do not recommend using other pellet brands, as Ninja Woodfire Technology was developed using Ninja pellets, and using other brands may cause ignition issues and unsatisfactory results for your food.

What pellet flavors should I pair with specific food categories?

No matter which blend you choose, our pellets can be used with anything you make. Use the Robust blend for rich woodfire flavors, and the All Purpose blend for a milder flavor. Both flavors pair great with whatever you make. For recommendations, please refer to the Pellet Insert included in the box.

Why does my food taste too smoky?

Smoke taste is based on personal preference and therefore will vary from person to person. There are many factors that affect the smokiness of food. The following factors will help reduce smoke absorption for a milder smoke flavor.

  • Allow ingredients to come to room temperature before putting them in the oven
  • Use oils or nonstick sprays.
  • Larger food loads absorb less smoke.
  • Foods with less moisture
  • Foods with less fat content
  • Cooking at a lower temperature
Why does my food not taste smoky enough?

Smoke taste is based on personal preference and therefore will vary from person to person. There are many factors that affect the smokiness of food. The following factors will help with smoke absorption and a stronger smoke flavor.

  • Keep ingredients cold before putting them on the oven.
  • Do not use any oils or nonstick sprays.
  • Smaller food loads, vegetables, and ground meat absorb more smoke.
  • Foods with more moisture
  • Foods with higher fat content
  • Cooking at a lower temperature
How long will the pellets burn while cooking?

Pellets will burn for approximately 30-90 minutes.

Can the pizza stone get wet?

No if the stone gets wet it is possible it will crack.

Where is the pizza stone located OOB?

It is located in the top of the tray in the polyfoam. There is a POP sticker on top of the tray to indicate its location

Can I use an extension cord?

Yes, connect to a properly 3-prong grounded GFCI outlet only and ensure to use the correct recommended cord.

Use only outdoor extension cords marked as "SJOW" and "suitable for use with outdoor appliances." For cords up to 25 feet, use 14 gauge. For 25 to 50-foot cords, use 12-gauge. Cords longer than 50 feet are not recommended. Using the incorrect cord could lead to the cord overheating, melting, and/or a drop in voltage. A drop in voltage can increase preheat times and impact cooking performance and/or cook times.

Can the Oven be used indoors?

No, this appliance is for outdoor household use only. DO NOT use any of the cooking functions indoors.

Why did a circuit breaker trip while using the unit?

The unit uses 1760 watts of power, so it must be plugged into an outlet on a 15-amp circuit breaker. Using an outlet on a 10-amp breaker will cause the breaker to trip. It is also important that the unit be the only appliance plugged into an outlet when in use. To avoid tripping a breaker, make sure the unit is the only appliance plugged into an outlet on a 15-amp breaker.

If the issue persists after ensuring you are following proper instructions, please contact Ninja Customer support.

Only if the car, SUV, or truck outlet can provide up to 15A of 120V power.

Can I use the unit inside?

No, this unit is for outdoor household use only.

What is the difference between Smoker and Woodfire Flavor Technology?

The smoker function is for low and slow smoking for BBQ classics like ribs and pulled pork.

Woodfire Flavor Technology allows you to add smoke when using the BAKE, SPECIALTY ROAST, MAX ROAST, PIZZA functions.

Why is the inside of my smoke box turning black?

When wood products are burned slowly, they produce a thick, sticky compound called creosote, which condenses on the relatively cool smoke box walls and ductwork above the smoke box. Once it bakes on and cools, this creosote layer becomes quite brittle and can readily be scraped off if the accumulation becomes unsightly or interferes with pellet door closure.

"CLD" appears on the control panel display

Cold Smoking is to be used to provide smoke flavor to foods; this is not intended for cooking. When used on meat, poultry, or fish, this process should always be used in conjunction with a separate step to bring food up to food-safe internal temperatures. Reference USDA guidelines for food-safe temperature recommendations.
